Henry Purcell and the Alehouse

August 11th, 7.30PM (EST), Online

Come, let us drink! Pour some wine or a pint of English ale and join the Henry Purcell Society for an evening of rousing tavern music from the Restoration-era Alehouse songs of Henry Purcell and his contemporaries. The event is co-hosted by Robert Lublin, Professor of theatre history and professional libations reviewer, and Shannon Rose McAuliffe, arts professor, musicologist, and singer, and will include live performances by some of HPSOB's most-beloved singers.

Recommended pours to accompany the event:

For wine lovers, consider pouring a Portuguese variety (French wine was embargoed by Parliament in 1679), perhaps a Douro if you like dry, or Port if you prefer sweet.

For beer, consider one of the following English ales, most of which are widely available in the USA:

  • Boddington’s Pub Ale – An ale like many you would find on tap in an English pub today. It is smooth and has a tasty, malty character.

  • Fuller’s London Pride – A favorite English Pale Ale with a malty backbone and light hops

  • Fuller’s ESB (Extra Special Bitter) – A classic English style with hoppy bitterness

  • Samuel Smith’s Imperial Stout – Dark, rich, and chocolatey. Careful, it’s strong!
